TU Wien

Vienna University of Technology, Institute for Computer Graphics and Algorithms (ICG) and the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformation (GEO)

The Vienna University of Technology was founding partner of the LBI and became a permanent partner in this institution. Main contacts at TU-Wien are the Department of Geodesy and Geoinformation (Head of department: Univ.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Dr.techn. Wolfgang Wagner) and the Research Groups Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (Head of the research group photogrammetry – Univ.Prof. Dipl.Ing. Dr.techn. Norbert Pfeifer). GEO is conducting research in the generation, representation and application of high resolution digital landscape models and has gained comprehensive research results with respect to many available sensors and methods, especially in regard to terrestrial and airborne laser scanning and multi-spectral image blocks. The developed algorithms (e.g. for data fusion) will be evaluated and optimised in this interdisciplinary project concerning their practical applicability. This feedback will lead to generalisation and further development of the theoretical foundations.

The department of Geodesy and Geoinformation is interested in participating in a two-fold manner. On the one hand, non-destructively acquired data from the near surface underground are an attractive challenge for volume visualisation techniques, similar to the display of oil fields using seismic data. On the other hand, VR techniques will allow interactive interpretation approaches and perceptible reconstruction of archeological results. In either case, inaccurate data is an interesting starting point for new research work. In the past, both ICG and GEO co-operated together (within TU “Innovative Projects”) with the main applicants, the VIAS and UFG of the University of Vienna, within several projects e.g. the development of virtual and augmented reality devices for the dissemination of historical and archaeological contents. The participation in the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute scientifically strengthens the TU partner institutes, as well as the entire TU. TU Wien
